The ceremony will be held on 2nd July at Cheltenham Racecourse to discern the winners in the annual Food and Drink awards. Hobbs House Butchery is nominated with two other Cotswold butcheries to win this prestigious award, just a year after Henry and Jess Herbert took the helm of Hobbs House's latest shop. What is particularly gratifying about the nomination is that the public, more than 1000, voted initially for their favourite Cotswold establishments, before a judging panel chose three finalists in each category. We'll keep you posted on the results in July.

It's been a busy few weeks for Hobbs House Bakery.

Since January's airing of The Fabulous Baker Brothers, Tom and Henry have whizzed around the UK [possibly picking up new ideas and inspiration] signing copies of their bestselling cook book. Promoting the book, series, and most importantly #realbread, Tom made an appearance on the Chris Evans breakfast show on BBC Radio 2 as the Mystery Guest [click here to read Tom's version of events].

At the end of April, Tom lectured at the Do lectures in West Wales, giving out the ultimate going home present, a jar of sourdough culture, then he and Henry raced to London for a reception at No 10 Downing Street.

Celebrating all that is great about the food in GREAT Britain, the brothers mingled with the freshest names in UK food, with David Cameron in attendance. To bring them back to earth, two days later Marie Claire released the June edition, with a seaside special featuring some dodgy looking floury 'British Beefcakes'!
www.marieclaire.co.uk
So times have been fun at Hobbs House recently, but never fear, there's plenty of excitment yet to come, we have released a celebratory Jubilee Loaf,

Boston Tea Party have started using our delicious produce as they expand across the West country,
www.bostonteaparty.co.uk
and we are giving away Golden Tickets with our tiger loaf for free tickets to the fabulous Giffords Circus.
=
Tom was mystery guest for Chris Evans on BBC Radio 2 breakfast show to launch National Bread Week.
The day started very early, with Trev and Polly driving a taster box of freshly baked loaves to the Radio 2 studios. It was Chris's first morning back after he'd given bread up for lent, and he had no intention of going back (#aquward moment whilst Tom attempts to woo Chris around), but one sniff of our Wild White sourdough loaf and he declared live to 8million people, "bread lovers of the world, I'm back on bread".
Jobs a good one! Thanks to everyone who got excited with us on twitter, and if you've subsequently ordered our bread online, then we hope you loved it, and thank you Mr Evans.

Read all about Tom's visit on the Woodborough website:

"We are delighted that one half of the Fabulous Baker Brothers is to be at the garden centre on Thursday, March 29 to do a book signing and chat about bread.

Baker Tom Herbert, who sprung to fame in the Channel 4 Show The Fabulous Baker Brothers, with his sibling Henry, will be at Woodborough from 3pm to 5pm. We already sell the Hobbs House Bakery bread but it will be an opportunity to meet and chat with Tom and find out more about his baking secrets.

Tom is a talented master baker whose famous Hobbs House Bakery sits just next door to his younger brother Henry's butchery. Together they work side by side making the amazing bread and delicious meaty accompaniments and fillings that have made their businesses so successful.

The cook book to accompany the hit TV show has mouthwatering oven-based recipes that unlock a world of gorgeous homemade breads, pastries, pies, cakes and confectionary. With carefully chosen ingredients and some easily-mastered techniques - this is healthy, wholesome, beautiful food that doesn't cost the earth to make.

Come and meet Tom and you can be sure of a first-class shopping experience at Woodborough. We have a stunning selection of plants, garden furniture, equipment and unique gifts, there's something for everyone. We are set in the heart of the beautiful Vale of Pewsey, close to the Kennet & Avon canal and Wiltshire's White Horse Trail. We are a family run business and completely independent."

England used to mark the occasion with an official half-day, working until 11am, and then after church the rest of the day was taken off to scoff pancakes. How brilliant is that?
In Scotland a Festy cock, a pancake shaped meal patty, and also a cockerel substitute, is baked in the hot ashes of a mill kiln to mark Shrovetide. In Hawaii the day is known as Malasada day and the slightly more appetising sweet fried doughy malasada's are made to use up butter and sugar from the plantations (I'm there!). Closer to home in Olney, Buckinghamshire, the residents have a Pancake race. This tradition dates back to 1445 and is run by the women of the town in memory of a cook who, on hearing the Shriving Bell, ran out of the house, still in her headscarf and apron, arriving at church still clutching the frying pan she had been using to make pancakes. (Has cooking or baking ever been so habitual that you start something else without noticing you're driving? Only me then.) AND, the prize for the fastest lady in the pancake race............? a kiss from the Verger. This day has some flippin’ hot heritage.

In the Herbert house, this special tiny Tuesday seems to spring up on us, and like the first snowdrop, quietly heralds a new season. We love to make a triple batch and pile them high on a big plate and serve them still steaming, to play the part of an edible scroll to a veritable smorgasbord of delicious savoury and sweet fillings.

The use of sourdough gives the pancakes a delightful depth of flavour that works really well with both dinner and pudding courses. Some sourdough regimes sourly suggest you pour surplus dough down the sink. Not anymore; let a surfeit of sourdough spark a pancake party. Great any time of year, guaranteed.

Now you can't beat the classic topping of lemon and sugar but I think there is no harm in mixing things up a bit. If your going to have an epic pancake session a bit of verity goes down well. In these cold days I long for the warming comfort of smoked fish, with creamy leeks and cheese. Here is a fun little number that propels the humble pancake to new heights.

The Cotswold town of Tetbury is on a roll, and if you haven't been recently, you should.

Famous for its jaw dropping beauty, very popular with couples as a wedding destination, tourists wanting a taste of England and busy locals alike. The impossible Church spire, the ancient covered market, and the hill that hosts the Wool sack races, all provide a setting for a town that's teaming with life. It's reputation used to be as the antiques town, but lately it's the bounty of great food and the quality of independent traders, spearheaded by the mighty Highgrove Shop, that make this town so rich. And at the heart of it all, on Church Street is Hobbs House Bakery. We fuel locals, regulars, and visitors alike, with the Hobbs House quality and charm you'd expect. Make a day of it. Tetbury is a place worth visiting.

p.s. if you're off to Westonbirt Arboretum, let us make your perfect picnic.

All our meat is free range and as local as we can get it as long as the quality is right. We mature our meat until we are happy to eat it.
Our beef is dry aged for at least 30 days, and is sourced within the county and slaughtered locally. The lamb is rare breed and feeds on the lush grass in local fields, we mature these beauties for two weeks.
Pigs are rare breed every time, and give the best crackling. Our pork comes from a number of local producers, including Mary Holbrook at Sleight Farm, Somerset who sells us her lovely British lop pork. This wonderful rare breed pig is reared slowly and fed a natural diet. As a Chef Henry used Mary's pork in his London restaurant because it was the most flavoursome and delicious that he could find.
All our poultry is from Madgetts Farm in Chepstow, their chickens are fed a natural cereal diet, roam freely across the fields, slowly grow to maturity and are then dry plucked, which guarantees a great crispy skin when cooked.
Sausages of many flavours are made on site and we slice the finest dry-cured and smoked bacon around. We truly are proud of what we do and wouldn’t have it any other way.
