Chocolate Cake Recipe

This chocolate cake recipe is perfect for Valentines day, Henry also calls it his get out of trouble cake.

The ultimate chocolate cake to woo with, laden with chocolate this is going to score you some serious brownie points.

This chocolate cake recipe can also be made in ramekins as Valentines chocolate pots.

Serves 6-8


  • 250g butter
  • 250g sugar
  • 10 eggs, separated
  • 500g chocolate, broken into pieces


  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/gas mark 4. Over a gentle flame heat a pan of water until just simmering. Place the butter and chocolate in a metal bowl and cover with cling film, then place on the pan and let the steam melt the chocolate. It's important not to stir the mixture or let any moisture get to the chocolate or it may seize and go grainy. Once it's melted leave it to cool a little.
  2. In an electric mixer beat the sugar and egg yolks until they are pale and fluffy. This will take about 10 minutes. Whilst on a slow speed pour in the cooled melted chocolate mixture, and continue to beat until smooth and glossy. If the chocolate is too hot it will cook the eggs.
  3. In a clean bowl whisk the egg whites to stiff peaks - it's easier done in a mixer if you're not feeling hardcore. Using a metal spoon, gently fold the egg whites into the chocolate mixture. Add the whites in stages, this keep the mixture light and fluffy. Don't over mix or all the air will be lost.
  4. Grease a 30cm/9 inch spring-form cake tin and spoon the mixture in. Bake for 30-40 minutes until set.

Delivery & Returns


We use Priority Express as our main courier service. For smaller and our through the letterbox range, we use Royal Mail. Our aim is for you to receive your items as safely and securely as possible and we use Priority Express to help us with this.

The couriers deliver anytime between 8.00am and 6.00pm on your chosen delivery date although are generally delivered before 4.00pm. If you supply an email address, you will be able to live track your package via Priority Express' updates. Wednesdays and Fridays as our designated delivery days.

Orders can only be taken up to noon on Monday for Wednesday delivery and noon on Wednesday for Friday delivery, just in time for the weekend.

Delivery is an overnight service, however anything outside of Mainland Scotland will take an additional 1-2 days and may incur an additional charge - for more details please contact us before placing your order. We class Monday - Friday as working days. Saturdays and Sundays are not included in this calculation.
