This chocolate celebration cake recipe makes 1 x 11″ round cake, or 2 x 6″ round cakes.

Serves one large or two small round cakes


  • 272g self-raising flour

  • 60g cocoa powder

  • 10g bicarbonate of soda

  • 182g caster sugar

  • 272g golden syrup

  • 225ml milk

  • 3 eggs

  • 225ml sunflower oil


  1. In the bowl of a mixer, stir all the dry ingredients together.

  2. Measure out the milk and syrup in one bowl, and the eggs and oil in another.

  3. With the mixer on slow, pour in the milk and syrup, whisk thoroughly.

  4. Beat the egg and oil together, then add to the mixer and whisk on med/high speed, stopping a couple of times to scrape down the sides of the bowl.

  5. Pour into the cake tin and bake at 150c for 40 mins.
