Our Latest Carbon Report and the Journey to Net Zero

At Hobbs House Bakery, we believe in leaving the planet better than we found it. That’s why we’ve committed to reaching net zero by 2032 — and we’re well on our way. Our second carbon footprint report, covering May 2022 to April 2023, shows real progress in reducing emissions from our core operations while laying the foundation for even greater impact.

Scope 1 & 2: Emissions We Control — Real Reductions Achieved

As a business of our size, we are required to measure and reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions — those directly tied to our energy use and fuel consumption. We’re proud to report:

    • 22.9% reduction in combined Scope 1 and 2 emissions since 2021
    • Electricity emissions down 49%, thanks to smarter sourcing and improved efficiency
    • Water emissions down 65%, and waste emissions down 63%, reflecting better resource management

These reductions put us more than halfway toward our science-based target of a 42% cut in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2031 — a major milestone on our net zero journey.

Scope 3: Reducing the Impact of Our Supply Chain

While we're not required to report Scope 3 emissions, we’ve chosen to do so voluntarily — because leading by example matters. These emissions are harder to control but crucial to address:

    • Ingredients remain our biggest footprint driver at 65% of total emissions. Through a deeper dive with Shipton Mill, we've reduced the carbon intensity of our flour — 30% less for conventional, 68% less for organic, compared to industry averages.
    • Transport emissions have risen with business growth, but our own fleet is significantly more efficient than third-party delivery routes — giving us a clear area for future improvement.
    • Packaging emissions have increased, in part due to new materials like wool pouches. We're now focused on lower-impact alternatives and boosting recycled content.

    So What’s Next?

    Our next report will reflect:

    • Our solar panels now generating 25% of our electricity
    • The four electric vans we now have on the road

These developments will drive further reductions and help us reach our goal of net zero by 2032.

Looking ahead, we will begin annual carbon reporting in 2025 and continue working closely with farmers, suppliers, and logistics partners to reduce Scope 3 emissions. We will also focus on ingredient reformulation and product life cycle analysis for lower-impact baking.
