    Celebrating Regenerative Farming Week
    12th - 19th September

This year, for the first time, we’re taking part in British Regenerative Farming Week, a dedicated week celebrating and championing the farmers, growers and businesses working to build a more sustainable food system.

    What is Regenerative Farming?

Regenerative farming focuses on practices that help restore soil health, support biodiversity and work to create a more resilient food system. The goal with regenerative farming is to give back to the soil and to create a sustainable and resilient farming system.

There are many different methods that farmers can adopt the regenerative way. One of those includes planting cover crops in their fields, these being crops that are not planted for harvesting but instead for maintaining soil health and biodiversity between their main crops. When we visited one of our regen farmer back in 2024, he told the team that you never want to see a field just full of dirt, as this soil is losing more and more nutrients each day. This also applies to making sure that there's a diverse crop rotation, which can not only boost biodiversity but also help naturally minimise things like pests and diseases.

If this summer has shown us anything, it is that with the changes in our weather and our chances of getting more extreme seasons, we need to adapt the way we grow our crops, and we believe that using regeneratively grown flour can help us make a difference in this.

Our Journey So Far Using Regenerative Flour

At Hobbs House Bakery, we’ve been baking with regeneratively grown flour for a few years now, adding it into more and more of our products.

It has been wonderful to see regenerative farming gaining more and more traction over the years. When we first used it in our bread, it was still quite an unfamiliar term to most customers. Over the years, we have spent the time educating and informing people of the benefits of choosing flour grown from healthier soils.

It's been really important to highlight the connection between the products on our shelves and the effect they can have on our planet, highlighting all the wonderful things regen farming does to our soil compared to conventional farming.

We feel very lucky to be part of such a wonderful community of bakers, farmers, millers and customers, all looking at the choices we make and finding ways to do things a little better for the future.

    Which Hobbs Products Are Regenerative?

Currently, all our burger buns and finger rolls are made using regenerative flour. We decided to use it in these products as we make large volumes of them every day, therefore encouraging more people to eat bread made from regen flour.

This past year, we also introduced RISE Re:Gen Flour into our Hot Cross Buns for Easter. Our Hot Cross Buns are one of our classic family recipes that have been passed down the generations, being adjusted slightly over the years to adapt to changes in the bakery industry. Introducing regenerative flour to our Hot Cross Buns signified our new era of baking at Hobbs focusing on ensuring our flour is grown in a more sustainable way.
