    King's Award for Sustainable Development

We’re delighted to share that Hobbs House Bakery has been honoured with a King’s Award for Sustainable Development.

Out of 197 organisations recognised across the UK, we’re proud to be one of just three from Gloucestershire and South Gloucestershire—and one of only 27 awarded specifically for sustainable development. This prestigious award announced today recognises our excellence in Sustainable Development

The King’s Award acknowledges the hard work and dedication that has gone into embedding sustainability across every area of our business — from sourcing and production to logistics, employment, resource use, and reducing waste.

George Herbert, our Managing Director, says:

“Our team is delighted that the business has been granted the King’s Award. We are all on a journey to improve how we use resources responsibly, to produce good, tasty food sustainably and reduce the impact we make on our environment.”

We're on a mission to nourish people and communities for generations to come, and we implement our sustainable approach to business at every opportunity. This includes our aim to source 100% of our grain from organic or regeneratively farmed land by 2032; supporting and nourishing our 170-strong team through continuous development and apprenticeship programmes; investing in our bakery to increase capacity for future growth; and donating surplus bread to local community initiatives that help tackle hunger.

    George adds:

“We’re especially proud of sourcing our ingredients as locally as possible, with most of our partners within a 20-mile radius. Over the past decade, we’ve cut our emissions by 22.9%, well on our way to our 10-year goal of a 42% reduction. Our electric vans, solar panels, green energy supply, and zero bread-to-landfill policy are all part of that effort. And in the last year alone, we’ve removed almost a quarter of a tonne of plastic from our packaging.”

    He concludes:

“The King’s Award gives us the confidence that we’re on the right path. But sustainability isn’t something with a finish line — as our business and the world around us changes, we’ll keep innovating to do the right thing for our people, our community, and the planet.”
